Home Made Soothing Cough Syrup

It's that time of year! In the current climate, the last thing we want is a cough. Here's an easy, home made remedy by Marnie of One Big One Small, to help get you through the colder seasons...

Sage is one of my favourite herbs to grow, it has wonderful aromatic leaves and beautiful purple flowers that attract the bees. Sage is an anti-bacterial, astringent and anti-inflammatory herb. Medicinally sage has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of many things. It stimulates digestion, cools fevers, cleanses the blood, is great to aid headaches, nervous tension and menstruation. It is also used in mouthwashes to strengthen the teeth and gums or as a gargle to soothe the mouth and throat.


Here is how to make a wonderfully soothing cough syrup. It is really simple and uses only 2 ingredients with no special kit needed, just a glass jar for storage.




Ingredients 1 cup of fresh sage leaves 1 cup of local honey






Method Wash your sage leaves, make sure they are trimmed away from the stems. Pop your leaves in the sterile jar and pour the honey over. Stir it up and pop in the fridge. Leave it for a week before using to allow time for all that sage goodness to ooze out into the honey. Remember to stir it daily. After a week you can remove the leaves if you wish. They make a great addition to a cup of herbal tea.


Directions Consume 1 tsp at a time to soothe sore throats, coughs and fevers. Alternatively add a spoonful of boiling water into a mug and drink . For a stronger syrup use more sage.
